The parcel is located within a narrow and deep courtyard in a central position in the historic core. The new building, a multifamily dwelling that replaces the current dilapidated building, aims to integrate into the context through the respect of the traditional typological characteristics of the core of Mendrisio. In fact, the volume adapts to the existing geometries and proposes facades in which the proportion between empty and full spaces and between plinth and roof refers to local typologies. The building binds the different heights that characterize the parcel, both between the three neighboring houses and between the height of the courtyard and that of the yard. Based on these assumptions comes the design idea of exploiting the complexity of the site to give rise to four apartments with different characteristics and orientations, trying to take full advantage of the merits of the different situations. In addition to the improvement of the building itself, the surrounding context is also improved, especially the courtyard, a basic characterizing element of building aggregation in Mendrisiotto.
